To Hot to Handle Tips from St. John Ambulance on How to Recognize and Treat Heat Related Illnesses July 6, 2010 (Toronto, ON) – With Ontario in the grips of a record heat wave, people run the risk of succumbing to heat related illnesses. As such, St. John Ambulance would like people to know how to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat related illness, and what to do if they suspect someone is affected. Heat Cramps Painful muscle cramps primarily in the legs and abdomen and excessive sweating. This is usually caused by losing too much water and salt through sweating, usually this is related to excessive physical activity in hot weather. They are not serious and can be reversed with some basic first aid. First Aid Ensure the person is put at rest in a cool place and given as much water as possible in small amounts so as not to cause nausea. If the cramps do subside seek medical help. Heat Exhaustion More serious than heat cramps, the symptoms include: excessive sweating, dilated pupils, complaints of dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, and cramps. The casualty may also have cool, clammy skin, a weak rapid pulse, rapid shallow breathing, vomiting and may go unconscious. First Aid Give the casualty water to drink, as much as they will take. If they vomit, do not give them anything by mouth and seek medical attention right away. Place them at rest in the shock position in a cool place and remove any excessive clothing and loosen clothing around the neck and waist. If they go unconscious put them in the recovery position and get medical help, continue monitoring their condition. Heatstroke (Sunstroke): This is a life-threatening condition, without immediate action heatstroke can result in permanent brain damage or death. If heatstroke is suspected seek medical attention immediately or call 911. Symptoms include, a rapid and full pulse that gets weaker and harder to feel in later stages, noisy breathing, flushed skin, hot and dry skin or hot and sweaty skin (when heatstroke is related to exertion), restlessness, a headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, convulsions and eventually unconsciousness. First Aid Call for medical assistance. It is critical that the body temperature is lowered as quickly as possible; cover them with a wet sheet and fan them, immerse them in cool not cold water (watch them closely for any changes) or sponge them with cool water particularly in the armpits neck and groin. Ontario Electronic Stewardship and the County of Peterborough host public collection event to divert electronic waste from landfills Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) and The County of Peterborough will host a public event on Saturday July 17 from 9 am – 3 pm at the Buckhorn Public Works Yard to collect and recycle unwanted electronic waste such as MP3 players, cameras, telephones, TVs, VCR & DVD players and recorders, radios, and more. The event is part of the broader OES electronic waste recycling program - an ambitious program to make it easier for Ontarians to safely recycle their electronic waste and keep it out of landfill sites. As of April 1, 2010, 44 electronic items are now accepted at more than 500 approved collection sites across the province. “Nearly four in five Ontario households (78 per cent) have at least one electronic product that is not working or not being used. This program makes recycling easier and encourages consumers and businesses to do what they can to help,” said Carol Hochu, OES Executive Director. “The reason to participate is simple – it helps keep hazardous electronic equipment out of landfill, which leads to a greener, healthier environment.” In addition, the program recovers valuable resources such as precious and base metals. There is no better example than the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympics medals which contain recycled metal from electronic waste. Residents who cannot attend the event at The County of Peterborough Buckhorn Public Works Yard (Hwy 36 across from Kawartha Winery) can visit the OES interactive website: www.dowhatyoucan.ca to find the closest OES-approved collection site to recycle their unwanted electronics. About Ontario Electronic Stewardship: The Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), a not-for-profit industry organization, oversees the responsible recycling of waste electronics through its network of more than 500 approved collection sites across the province. Under the banner Do What You Can, each Ontario resident and business is encouraged to safely recycle electronic waste. The program was developed with Waste Diversion Ontario on behalf of the Ontario government under the Waste Diversion Act, 2002. The OES’s electronic waste recycling program accepts 44 items of electronic waste including unwanted equipment such as computers, televisions, DVD players, hand-held devices and more.
